Summary of lekgotla discussions
POSTED ON: June 5, 2025 IN PressThe inaugural Operation Phumelela lekgotla, held on 2 June 2025 at the JSE, brought together senior leaders from industry and government, including regulators, to develop proposals aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of South Africa’s financial sector.
Four workstreams presented research-backed recommendations across key structural issues:
- Non-ZAR listings and collateral
- Non-ZAR fund management
- Cost of capital for SMEs in private capital markets
- Cost of capital for small and mid-caps in public markets
The lekgotla marks a shift from research to coordinated action. The South African Financial Sector Competitive Taskforce is now consolidating feedback from the working groups into formal proposals for engagement with policymakers and regulators.
